Club football is evaluated by taking all European competitions into account. This isn't just talk for losers. The Champions League represents the best of every European league; the Europa League involves second-tier teams, and the Conference League features mid-table sides. It provides an overall picture of the leagues' quality.

Heysel didn't harm the current national team or today's clubs; it simply reduced the total trophy haul of English clubs.

Historically, Portugal isn't on the same level as the English national team, nor can Portuguese clubs compete with English ones.

They have simply achieved some good results recently.

Brazil hasn't won a World Cup in 25 years, yet I don't think anyone would call them a joke just because their last title dates back nearly three decades.
